The College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin seeks applications to the post of Assistant Dean for Business Operations.
This administrative position manages a budget of over $50 million and serves as a primary business advisor to the dean, overseeing financial, information technology, facilities and human resource activities for the College of Fine Arts. This includes a focus on instructional programs and budget forecasting, working closely with department and unit heads across the college and their respective business officers (Department of Art and Art History, Butler School of Music, School of Design and Creative Technologies, Department of Theatre and Dance, Texas Performing Arts, and Landmarks).
- Finance: Provide oversight and leadership to all financial matters including accounting, reporting and forecasting, purchasing and payables, cash management, personnel and payroll processing, as well as internal controls and compliance with institutional, state and federal policies and regulations. Execute the annual representation letter and performs the accounts certification and review of balances for the college.
- Budget Preparation: Coordinate the preparation of the fiscal budget comprised of appropriated funds, tuition and fees, and gift and endowment funds, and other earned revenue streams. Prepare the Provost five-year budget planning document. Assess, on a regular basis, the business performance of the college and provide the Dean regular reporting that conveys the performance results along with recommended business actions to be taken. Advise senior leadership in addressing the college’s operational challenges, performance, and business direction.
- Human Resources: Oversee the Human Resources administration and ensures compliance with HR policies and regulations. Advise the Dean on workforce planning and human resource budgeting. Manage financial faculty hiring commitments.
- Information Technology: Implement the Dean’s goals and priorities in business, personnel, facilities and technology operations. Work collaboratively with the Dean to develop initiatives and carry through to successful completion. Initiates ideas and programs and carries these through to completion and with success.
- Facility Projects: Manage the college’s facility operation including management of large renovation projects. Provide input and guidance relating to facilities operations and space allocation. Coordinate college space management and utilization reports for submission to campus units.
- Staff Supervision: Supervise, including hire, manage, and develop senior staff in the areas of Business, Human Resources, Technology and Facilities.
- Department Budget Oversight: Prepare financial and other statistical reports, including aggregating unit specific financial information at the department level. Generate reports to accommodate a diverse set of needs and users.
- Chief University Business Officer Committee Role: Serves as liaison with the Provost’s Office, Budget Office, Office of Accounting, and other administrative offices of the University. Acts as Chief Financial Officer and serves on the Chief University Business Officers committee. Interprets and communicates institutional policy and implements processes to facilitate its compliance.

The ideal candidate holds a master’s degree and ten years of experience in managing a complex budget in higher education or similarly complex organizations with skills in budgeting and forecasting, fund accounting and reporting, internal controls, and compliance. Experience should include years of experience managing human resources and experience in facilities management and technology services. This candidate possesses the ability to leverage software and data analytic tools to compile and analyze large-scale financial data for a multimillion-dollar budget with multiple funding sources, identifying trends and projections, and making effective and timely financial and business recommendations and decisions. This candidate has an advanced working knowledge of accounting policies, principles, and business practices, and excels in service excellence, staff management competencies, and the ability to flexibly and comfortably adapt to changing work demands.
